Does your block heater need to stay plugged in overnight?
How Edmonton drivers can choose a block-heater timer schedule, check cords before winter and know when to ask for an inspection.

Plan around your departure, not an all-night habit
If you park outside in Edmonton, leaving the block heater on from supper until morning may seem like the simplest winter routine. A timer can avoid unnecessary operating hours, but choose its schedule from the instructions for your vehicle and installed heater.
Natural Resources Canada’s 2016 winter-driving guide recommends switching a block heater on two hours before starting. That is general efficiency guidance, not a replacement for model-specific directions.

Why two hours and three hours are not interchangeable rules
For example, Ford’s 2019 F650750 manual describes a heater that warms engine coolant, has no thermostat and reaches its maximum temperature after about three hours. Ford says running that system longer adds no performance benefit and uses unnecessary electricity.
This example does not establish the operating time for your car. Check the manual for your exact model, engine and heater, including when to use it. If those details are unclear, confirm them before setting a timer.

Check the electrical setup before the first cold morning
Health Canada advises checking electrical products for recognized Canadian certification marks and matching extension-cord ratings to the equipment. Choose a timer and cord suitable for their intended outdoor use and the heater’s load; a household cord is not automatically suitable.
- Inspect cords and plugs for wear or damage; replace damaged equipment instead of continuing to use it.
- Fully unroll the extension cord and keep connections dry.
- Preserve the ground prong. Do not use a three-prong-to-two-prong adapter.
- Follow the product instructions, including whether an extension cord is permitted and its required rating.
Include unplugging in your morning routine
Ford’s cited instructions require unplugging and stowing the heater connection before starting and driving. Add that step to your departure routine, especially when a timer means you did not personally switch the heater on that morning.

Ask about an inspection when the setup is uncertain
Ford recommends checking heater operation before winter. If you cannot identify the installed heater or its instructions, ask for help confirming the equipment rather than assuming every visible vehicle plug follows the same schedule.
When contacting Auto Wise, have the vehicle year, make, model, engine and any heater paperwork ready. Ask whether the shop can inspect your heater and cord, and confirm availability. Use the electrical-diagnosis and contact links below to start that conversation.
