Tires & seasonal preparation
Tire rotation, balancing and alignment: which service are you booking?
A practical guide for Edmonton drivers to distinguish tire rotation, wheel balancing and alignment, and ask what a tire-service estimate includes.

Three names, three different jobs
When booking tire work in Edmonton, it helps to say exactly what you need. Rotation changes where tires sit on the vehicle. Balancing corrects uneven weight distribution in a tire-and-wheel assembly. Alignment adjusts suspension geometry so the wheels meet the vehicle’s specifications.
Doing one does not establish that the other two were performed. A service estimate should make the work clear, especially when you are also arranging a seasonal tire change.

Rotation changes tire positions
Rotation moves tires between suitable positions to help distribute wear. It is a maintenance procedure, not a promise to remove a vibration or repair existing tire damage.
Bridgestone explains that the correct pattern depends on the drivetrain, whether the tires are directional, and whether front and rear tire sizes match. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s schedule and restrictions rather than assuming every vehicle uses the same cross pattern.
Bring your last tire-service record if you have it. Ask which tires can be moved, which pattern applies, and whether the inspection found uneven wear that needs further attention.

Balancing addresses how each assembly spins
A balancing machine measures imbalance in the tire-and-wheel assembly; a technician uses the result to place balancing weights. Moving that assembly to a different corner of the vehicle does not perform this measurement.
Michelin distinguishes balance from alignment: an aligned vehicle can still have vibration from imbalance, and a balanced wheel can still wear unevenly if alignment is wrong. If you have noticed a shake, describe it to the shop rather than selecting a service solely from the symptom.

Alignment concerns suspension angles
Bridgestone describes alignment as an adjustment of the suspension, with checks involving camber, toe and caster. It is separate from rotating tires or adding wheel weights. Worn suspension components can also contribute to incorrect alignment.
Uneven tread wear, pulling or an off-centre steering wheel are reasons to request an assessment. They are not a remote diagnosis. Ask what was measured and whether any other condition needs attention before an adjustment can address the concern.

Ask for a clear scope before approving work
These are suggested booking questions, not a checklist of work every vehicle automatically needs. Share your vehicle details, the reason for the visit and any recent tire work.
- Is the quoted work a rotation, balancing, an alignment check, an alignment adjustment, or a combination?
- Which recommendations follow my vehicle’s maintenance schedule, and which follow an inspection finding?
- What does the estimate include, and will you contact me before adding work?
- If I am booking a seasonal change, which of these separate services are included?
